It's crucial to remember that hazardous wastes should be handed over in their original packaging and not mixed with each other. Leaving hazardous waste before or after collection endangers humans and the environment.
Examples of hazardous wastes include used gloves and dressings saturated with blood, laboratory cultures, medical sharps, surgical waste, paint and solvent-based products, pesticides, herbicides, motor oil, car batteries, mercury, gasoline, and batteries (including rechargeable ones). Industrial examples are also found in manufacturing and hospitals, such as paint sludge, chemical byproducts, bio-medical infectious waste, and pesticide sludge.
Hazardous wastes should not be mixed or disposed of with regular household waste because they:
- Pose health risks due to toxicity or infectious nature, potentially spreading diseases or causing poisoning.
- Are reactive or flammable, and mixing them can cause chemical reactions leading to toxic fumes, fires, explosions, or container rupture.
- Contain corrosive substances (e.g., acids) that can damage containers, harm sanitation workers, and contaminate the environment.
- Pollute soil and water when improperly disposed, as toxins from batteries, mercury, and chemicals leach into the environment.
- Require specialized handling and disposal under regulatory frameworks to prevent harm to public health and the environment.
Thus, hazardous wastes must be separated and disposed of through designated collection programs or professional services to ensure safety and regulatory compliance.
If you have waste-related questions, you can contact the waste consultation telephone from Monday to Friday from 7:30 to 12:00 and on Thursdays from 13:30 to 18:00 at 07231/39-1393.
Remember, the next hazardous waste collection will take place in March 2024. Let's work together to keep our city clean and safe!
In addition to disposing of hazardous waste safely during the upcoming event, residents might also consider updating their home-and-garden lifestyle choices to minimize the accumulation of such waste. For instance, eco-friendly alternatives like non-toxic cleaning products and natural pest solutions can help reduce the need for harmful chemicals. Furthermore, by adopting a lifestyle that prioritizes waste reduction and recycling, one could ensure a healthier lifestyle for themselves and the environment, and also contribute to the ongoing effort to keep the city clean and safe.
