Dresden's Zwinger Courtyard Renovation: Nearly Home Stretch!

Dresden Zwinger's inner courtyard renovation almost finished - Renovation work underway in the inner courtyard of Dresden Zwinger, yet to be finished

Hey there! The courtyard of Dresden's iconic Zwinger, a must-see for tourists, is almost ready to shine again! The renovation is in its final throes, and we're expecting a comeback by late August, according to the Saxon State Property and Building Management (SIB).

With two fountains restored, the media trench completed, and a snazzy new access ramp built, progress is moving at a brisk pace. The lawn mirror and pathways in the western half have been jazzed up, and parts are already open for your stroll. As the SIB spokesperson put it, "Nearly half of the western courtyard is ready for visitors to enjoy!"

Some areas, like the Crown Gate, still need tender love and care. Manhole covers are being installed, and temporary structures are getting replaced with sandstone surfaces. The eastern half is currently undergoing landscaping magic. The total cost of this revitalization project stands at around 15.4 million euros.

The Dresden Zwinger is a primo example of Baroque architecture and a symbol of the city. Built between 1709 and 1728, it houses six pavilions, several archways, a long gallery, and a symmetrical courtyard. Overseen by a dedicated building authority, the site boasts 1.2 kilometers of masonry, 15,000 square meters of facade area, terraces, staircases, and 698 sculptures, most adorning various nooks, crannies, and balustrades.

Average annual preservation costs run around 1.5 million euros, and improvements to fire protection and new elevators are part of the investment. Archaeologists have unearthed traces of medieval buildings during excavations parallel to the courtyard, but these hidden gems are once more covered by the ground.

Over the past 33 years, around 222 million euros have been poured into renovating and maintaining this ensemble, which includes the Semper Gallery. Alongside the Semper Opera House, Frauenkirche, and Residenzschloss, it's one of Dresden’s top tourist attractions, brimming with three museums of the State Art Collections.
