Repairs to facades and windows are underway
The historic Düsseldorf Old Town Hall, a Renaissance gem located at Market Square 1, is undergoing a significant renovation as part of the "Renovation of Municipal Buildings" project. Originally built in 1573, the town hall has undergone numerous transformations, most notably by architect Johann Joseph Couven in 1749, who added the tower's pilasters, cornices, and a balcony portal. The building, which includes five wings, is currently undergoing extensive renovations, with the main focus on Market Square 1 and the Old Town Hall wings.
However, there is no direct information available about a specific renovation project concerning the interior courtyard facade of Market Square 2. The available sources primarily focus on the architectural history and other unrelated projects by architectural firms around Germany. For those seeking precise, current progress or restoration details on the interior courtyard facade at Market Square 2, consulting local Düsseldorf municipal project announcements or specialized heritage conservation communications may be necessary.
The renovation process is not limited to Market Square 1. At this location, the facades and windows show visible signs of aging, and work on necessary scaffolding of the facades has already begun. The works at Market Square 1 will include repairs, replacement of damaged stone materials, and the repair of cracks and damaged joints. Additionally, roof gutter repair works are planned.
At Market Square 2, the historic windows will be repaired as necessary, provided with a protective coating, and 21 protected windows will be dismantled, overhauled, and reinstalled. The interior courtyard facade will undergo cleaning of natural stone elements in the base area, a new color design including plastering and crack repairs. These works will be carried out in close coordination with the monument authority and will be accompanied by specialists in restoration.
The renovation process will also include a facade cleaning process using high-pressure cleaning with a wet jet method for heavily soiled areas, excluding the building at Market Square 2. Notably, the cornices, lintels, brickwork, and joints at Market Square 1 are porous, faded, cracked, and weathered, and will be addressed during the renovation.
The city treasurer responsible for the Building Management Office, Dorothée Schneider, is pleased with the measures, stating they ensure the long-term preservation of the value of the historic Düsseldorf town hall. The works at Market Square 2 will not involve the main, front, or courtyard facades, providing a unique opportunity to maintain the original architectural integrity of these areas.
Scaffolding sheets in facade optics are being installed at Market Square 1 for the duration of the works, and the two distinctive "blue" doors at the building in Market Square 1 will be restored. The works at both locations have a budget of 150,000 euros each. As the renovation progresses, the city aims to maintain safety-related requirements and preserve the value of these historic buildings.
