Revamping the Railways Station's Entryway: Enhancements for Walkers and Bikers
Revamped Osnabrück Railway Station Square: A Bike-Friendly, Accessible Space
Get ready, Osnabrück inhabitants! The city is gearing up to revamp the southern railway station square, bringing a safer, more pleasant, and bike-friendly environment to pedestrians, cyclists, and visually impaired individuals.
The phase between the bus station and the entertainment complex that houses a cinema, fast-food joint, and post office will undergo a transformation. Key changes include a refined cycle-path called a 'bike boulevard,' which will lead to the 2023-opened biycle station, and installation of a comprehensive tactile guidance system for visually impaired folks right up to the station entrance.
Adding more green to the cityscape, around 300 square meters of space along the bike boulevard will be unsealed, turned into gardens. A drinking water fountain will also be installed for added convenience.
To begin, 35 bike racks will be removed in March, with a further 183 bike racks initially cleared last year, to make way for the new bike boulevard and greenery. This not only creates a more organized bike traffic pattern but also helps manage surface water more efficiently during the summer months.
Moreover, to prevent bikes obstructing pedestrians and fellow cyclists on the square, free bike parking will be provided in several locations close to the station square. The city of Osnabrück anticipates obtaining approximately 1.4 million euros in funding from federal and EU sources for the project.
As construction work kicks off in March, cyclists are urged to relocate any bikes parked on the station square to the bike station, nearby areas, or appropriate spots in time, or risk them being removed by the city. Relevant information about construction start dates will be displayed promptly on-site notices.
In conjunction with the bike boulevard's launch, the surrounding area's cycling infrastructure will be revamped, requireing a trailight system upgrade at the Goethering/Konrad-Adenauer-Ring/Heinrich-Heine-Straße intersection. A mobile traffic light will be in place as early as Monday, January 20, for hassle-free long-term traffic flow on the Wallring and towards the main station.
Stay tuned for updates, bike-loving Osnabrückers! As part of the bike boulevard's creation, cyclists can look forward to safer cycling, improved bike parking, and an eco-friendly, welcoming city square for all to enjoy.
In the upcoming transformation, the newly refined bike boulevard, connected to the 2023-opened bicycle station, will enhance the public-transit integration, promoting healthy lifestyle choices and redefining the lifestyle of Osnabrück residents. To complement this revamp, a comprehensive tactile guidance system for visually impaired individuals will be installed for accessibility. Additionally, home-and-garden elements will be incorporated, with around 300 square meters along the bike boulevard turned into gardens, and a drinking water fountain installed.
