Establishments such as the Rheinwelle in Gau-Algesheim, pools in Worms, and the Neubornbad in Worrstadt all share this common predicament - open positions. They require lifeguards, apprentices, and specialized staff for pool operations.

A Multitude of Open Positions

Dirk Osterhoff, the manager of the Rheinwelle, reveals that his facility presently has four full-time positions up for grabs. The shortage of competent workers is noticeable at the Rheinwelle, with Osterhoff reporting that they have managed to find at least two apprentices for this year. Despite this, he states that they would hire more if suitable candidates were found. Remarkably, last year, the swimming pool did not have any apprentices at all.

The Root Causes of the Apprentice Shortage

Dirk Osterhoff attributes the scarcity of apprentices in the swimming pool sector to a few factors. On one hand, weekends and public holidays often require workers in swimming pools, which is unappealing for many. On the other hand, the job demands certain skills, according to Osterhoff. Aspiring employees should display an interest in natural sciences, possess physical fitness, and have swimming abilities. Beyond water surveillance, specialist staff for pool operations also handle water analysis, pool technology maintenance, and chemical management.

External Support Needed due to Staffing Shortages

Although the Rheinwelle and its two partner swimming pools - the Naturerlebnisbad Bingen and the Freibad Ingelheim - need not close as a result of open positions, water surveillance has become the responsibility of an external company. This arrangement is less than ideal, as all three swimming pools hope to find staff capable of handling all tasks, including water surveillance, pool technology maintenance, and water analysis.

Possible Hour Reductions at Neubornbad in Worrstadt

If the Neubornbad in Worrstadt fails to find staff, it may need to cut back hours of operation, managers say. Markus Petri, the facility's manager, acknowledges that weekend work is not particularly appealing. Furthermore, it's usually not possible to take time off during the summer. However, he adds that additional staff could allow for a week off during summer.

For the upcoming season, Petri is seeking an apprentice, a specialized pool operations professional, and a lifeguard. In the past, students often served as lifeguards, but many are now occupied with schoolwork during the semester break, Petri notes.

The Rheinwelle and the Neubornbad in Worrstadt have started to welcome career changers, offering opportunities for those interested in the profession. Individuals can first complete lifeguard training at these pools and, following a few years of professional experience, transition into specialized pool operations roles.
