The Whirlwind of Fenix: Rotterdam's Stunning Migration Museum
Rotterdam introduces an artsy hotspot for local and international visitors alike.
Sail into Rotterdam, where the city's rich migratory past becomes the canvas for a dazzling art experience at Fenix - the Museum of Migration. Queen Máxima, the Argentine-born queen of the Netherlands, dedicated this architectural marvel, boasting a Death-Defying Twister at its heart.
Rotterdam, the vibrant Dutch port metropolis, is now graced with a captivating art hotspot named Fenix. A historic warehouse, aged a century, transformed by Ma Yansong of MAD Architects, now houses the continent's first museum to explore migration through contemporary art.
The highlight of this breathtaking structure is the thunderbolt-shaped stairway, christened "The Tornado." A vortex of gleaming steel and wood, it spirals from the lower deck to the rooftop, reflecting the city, the water, and the people in its lustrous surface. Offering panoramic vistas of Rotterdam, the Twister provides a bird's-eye view over the charming Hotel New York and the river Maas.
Covering an expansive 16,000 square meters, Fenix reveals the narrative of migration through an array of artworks, snaps, and personal keepsakes. The labyrinth of about 2,000 suitcases belonging to emigrants adds a poignant touch to the museum, while an old, colorfully painted city bus from the Big Apple brings a dash of New York charm.
Positioned at the core of the historic port district, Fenix stands as a beacon in a locality where millions embarked for the New World and others stepped onto Dutch soil. Rotterdam, an architectural marvel resurrected from the ashes of World War II, is renowned for its striking skyline and cultural diversity, housing over 170 nationalities.
