San Francisco's Modern Jewish Museum Declares Temporary Closure

San Francisco's Contemporary Jewish Museum (CJM) is shutting its doors to the public starting December 15, 2024, for a minimum of a year. The museum's financial woes, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, have led to this difficult decision.

This strategic move by the CJM's Board of Trustees is aimed at ensuring the museum's longevity. Phased staff reductions are on the horizon, but the closure isn't permanent; instead, it's a revitalizing "sabbatical" to envision a sustainable future.

The museum intends to take this time off to brainstorm, experiment, and adapt to engage broader audiences in innovative ways. Despite the galleries being closed, offsite educational programs will run until December 20, 2024, and scheduled tours will continue until the closure date, with free admission for visitors.

As the CJM undergoes this period of rest and renewal - akin to the Jewish Sabbath - community members and partners are encouraged to make the most of the museum's educational resources. Those with inquiries regarding programming should reach out via [email protected].

While this temporary closure may restrict access to Jewish culture and events, it's hoped that the CJM will emerge stronger and more sustainable, continuing to play a pivotal role in promoting Jewish culture and diversity in San Francisco and the Bay Area. Future updates will be shared as they become available.

Fun Fact: Did you know that Jewish culture offers a day of rest and reflection similar to the Sabbath? It's called the Shabbat, a practice enjoyed across Jewish communities worldwide.
