Seven Decorative Grass Varieties for Spectacular Autumn Hues and Year-Round Elegance

Ornamental grasses, with their easy growth, low maintenance, and diverse array of colors, sizes, and textures, have become a popular choice for garden enthusiasts. These hardy plants, many of which originate from natural regions in North America and East Asia, not only add a touch of elegance to any garden but also offer a splash of colour during the autumn season.

One such grass is Pampas grass, which thrives in zones 7 through 10. It grows up to 10 feet tall, boasting sturdy, upright stems that hold beautiful, feathery flower plumes from late summer into fall. Pampas grass is easy to grow in full or partial sun in well-drained soil, but it is important to note that it is invasive in some areas. Variations like 'Stunningdale Silver' and 'Ivory Feathers' bloom with silver or white flowers in fall, while 'Rosea' and 'Pink Feather' pampas grass feature pink flower plumes that last well into the season.

Maiden grass, growing up to 12 feet tall, is another popular choice, particularly for its graceful, arching shape. It prefers moist, well-drained soil in full sun. 'Fire Dragon' maiden grass, for instance, showcases bright red-orange fall foliage and feathery white flowers.

Pink Muhly Grass, a favourite for its easy care and drought resistance, grows up to 3 feet tall. It does best in full sun and doesn't require a lot of water, making it a great choice for xeriscaping and difficult, dry soils. Pink Muhly Grass is characterised by feathery, pink flower plumes that bloom in fall.

Little bluestem, a native North American prairie grass, is tough, easy to grow, and can grow up to four feet tall. It transitions to shades of maroon, bronze, and orange in fall. 'Standing Ovation', 'Blaze', and 'Blue Heaven' are cultivars of little bluestem with different fall colors.

Pheasant's tail grass, best for warmer gardens, is only hardy in zones 8 through 10. It grows 2 to 3 feet tall and has long, thin leaves that fall gracefully from a compact central clump. Pheasant's tail grass turns various shades of orange, red, and yellow in fall.

Prairie dropseed, an endangered grass in some areas, helps native wildlife by letting it grow and develop seeds. It is a native grass with a fluffy, feathery look, growing only to about 2 feet tall and turning into shades of gold-orange to bronze in fall and winter.

Ornamental grasses can be environmentally friendly, resisting drought and requiring few resources. Many of these plants change colour in autumn and maintain that colour after the first frost, making them a beautiful and sustainable addition to any garden.
