Simple Veggies Ideal for Pot Cultivation in June:
Growing your own veggies, even with a small outdoor space, is entirely achievable! Whether you've got a balcony garden, a patio, or a decking area, you can still enjoy the harvest of an edible garden.
The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) suggests that while vegetables can be cultivated all year round, April to October is the most popular time. And although the initial months have passed, there's still plenty of time to start planting.
If you're still wanting to grow some veggies this June, check out these five easy vegetables to plant in pots:
1. Radishes
Radishes, with their fiery taste and vibrant red hue, add just the right zest to summer salads. Gardening expert Calum Maddock from HomeHow indicates that salad radishes are quick and easy to grow from seed and can flourish in even the smallest of spaces.
Maddock suggests planting them in a pot with a minimum diameter of 8 inches and a depth of 10 inches. Water them regularly to maintain moist soil and allow for even growth.
2. Spring Onions
Spring onions, perfect for salads, stir-fries, and various dishes, can be easily grown in pots. Maddock recommends planting spring onion seeds in pots with at least a 12-inch diameter and depth.
Place the pots in a sunny, open location, and enrich the soil with a quality fertilizer. Once planted, remember to keep the soil consistently moist.
3. Kale
Kale, this superfood's ornamental appeal and nutritious benefits make it a great addition to your container garden. Maddock suggests opting for a dwarf or compact variety, such as Dwarf Green Curled kale, and growing it in a pot of at least 12 inches in diameter.
For optimal results, the soil should be well-draining and enriched. Kale will keep on producing leaves, making it a continuous harvester.
4. Zucchini
June is still a perfect time to plant zucchini seeds, or you can grow zucchini plants from established starters in containers. Select a bush variety of zucchini, such as Cue Ball and Bush Baby, and plant in a pot that's at least 18 inches wide.
Zucchini plants benefit from an enriched soil and high-potash feed, like tomato feed.
5. Beets
Beets are versatile, tasty, and can be eaten raw, pickled, or cooked. To grow beets in pots, choose a round variety and a pot that's at least 6 to 8 inches deep. Fill the pot with multipurpose soil, sow the seeds thinly, and water lightly. Place the pot in a sunny position.
When planting vegetables in containers, smaller pots can restrict the plants' access to moisture and nutrients. The RHS advises aiming for a pot that's at least 18 inches deep and wide. Water your container-grown vegetables when the top inch of soil feels dry. Using a high-quality potting mix and balanced fertilizer will help promote healthy growth.
Incorporating radishes, spring onions, kale, zucchini, and beets into your home-and-garden lifestyle is a delightful way to add variety to your dishes. With some guidance from the Royal Horticultural Society, aim for larger pots (8 inches minimum for radishes, 12 inches for spring onions and compact kale, 18 inches for zucchini, and 6 to 8 inches for beets) to ensure proper nutrient and moisture access for optimal growth.
