Skyscraper emerges in Tallinn cityscape
Tallinn, the vibrant heart of Estonia, is set to get a stylish new addition to its skyline. A collaboration between French and Estonian architects has dreams of a magnificent skyscraper rising at Tartu Maantee 17, nestled cozily next to the beloved Stockmann shopping centre.
This architectural marvel, christened "Lumière," emerged victorious in an international competition. With a staggering 87 submissions from both local and international architectural firms, the competition piqued considerable interest in the design world.
Officials celebrated the winning design as a pioneering skyscraper imbued with eco-conscious thinking. The edifice will upscale living standards in Tallinn's bustling business district and reinvent the city's urban feel. While conserving natural resources, it caters to the local climate, embodying thoughtful sustainability.
A mixed bag of amenities will inhabit the building—you'll find cafes, restaurants, art galleries, wellness centres, and more. The structure's heart will house a public observation deck, offering panoramic vistas of the city.
Blending Nature and Urban Life
In keeping with the regional plan for towering buildings, all competing designs respected the 130-meter (427 feet) height restriction. Officially, the proposed Lumière is set to rise a graceful 125 meters (410 feet) above ground level, making it stand shoulder-to-shoulder with other nearby high-rise structures in the Maakri district.
Marcelo Joulia, an illustrious architect and designer, represents the winning team. With a portfolio spanning architectural masterpieces in cities like Paris, Dubai, Shanghai, and Buenos Aires, Joulia is confident that Lumière will adorn Tallinn's skyline gracefully, gracefully intertwining nature and urban life.
According to Joulia, Lumière's design philosophy hinges on two principles: fostering a sustainable way of life and embracing innovation. Its defining cylindrical form is a nod to Tallinn's unique architectural landscape and the towers adorning its Old Town.
