Smart Home Innovations Unveiled: Premonition of 2055 British Homes Featuring Luminous Walls, Intelligent Lock Systems, and the Dissolution of Traditional Power Outlets

In a series of intriguing predictions, futurist Tom Cheesewright has envisioned a radical overhaul of British homes over the next 30 years. His vision, published by the firm Citibase, paints a picture of homes powered by AI, equipped with invisible kitchen appliances, and generating their own energy.

One of the most striking predictions is the integration of AI in home functions. By 2052, Cheesewright foresees AI controlling heating, lighting, and doors, making our homes smarter and more efficient. The concept of lighting wallpaper replacing traditional bulbs and glowing walls instead of lightbulbs by 2052 is an intriguing prospect, promising a more aesthetically pleasing and energy-efficient home.

Cheesewright also predicts the end of 3-pin sockets in British homes, with wireless charging becoming the norm. This shift is expected to begin by 2035, as all gadgets in British homes will be charged wirelessly by 2065. The current trend of wireless charging, primarily used for smartphones, is set to expand, with Porsche recently unveiling an electric Cayenne that powers up by parking over a charging pad.

The rise of energy-saving technology has been the most successful prediction from the 1990s TV programme Tomorrow's World. The confidence to adopt such technology comes down to good, old-fashioned financial common sense, according to Hive director Tom Pakenham. Brits are happy to adopt energy-saving gadgets in the home if they can see real, everyday cost benefits, Pakenham adds.

This trend is evident in the growing uptake of home upgrades such as smart thermostats, EV chargers, and solar panels, as reported in Hive's Home Report 2025. However, many homeowners still think the tech is too expensive, but the report suggests a growing acceptance among Brits.

In an ambitious prediction, Cheesewright envisions every home in Britain generating and storing its own energy with personal power plants by 2065. This self-sufficient approach to energy could revolutionise the way we power our homes and reduce our reliance on traditional energy sources.

Finally, Cheesewright predicts the demise of plug sockets by 2065, with AI-controlled doors locking homes and all gadgets charging wirelessly. This vision of the future promises a clutter-free, efficient, and technologically advanced home.

As we move towards this future, it's clear that the adoption of new technology will play a crucial role in shaping our homes and our lives. Whether it's voice-controlled devices, domestic robots, or AI-powered homes, the next 30 years are set to bring about significant changes.
