St. Peter-Ording's Experience House Wins State Recognition for Promoting Architectural Tradition
The picturesque town of St. Peter-Ording, nestled within the National Park and UNESCO World Heritage Site Wattenmeer, has recently received a significant accolade. The Experience Center in St. Peter-Ording was awarded the State Award for Architecture, Schleswig-Holstein on September 15, 2025.
This award underscores St. Peter-Ording's commitment to architectural culture and sustainable tourism. The idea and design for the Experience Center were developed by Holzer Kobler Architekturen in collaboration with the consortium partner Uniola. The innovative wooden and glass construction of the center impresses with its sustainability and architectural quality.
The Experience Center serves as a meeting place for locals and visitors alike, strengthening the identity of St. Peter-Ording as a lively gathering spot. Katharina Schirmbeck, a local official, praised the center, stating that it adds to the town's appeal as a popular North Sea spa and sulfur bath in Germany, with approximately 2.73 million overnight stays in 2024.
The Award for Architecture, Schleswig-Holstein, is presented every four years since 2022. It recognizes outstanding achievements in architecture, urban planning, and landscape design in the region. Winning projects are not only honored with a plaque but also presented in a traveling exhibition touring the state.
Six other projects, in addition to the Experience Center, were also awarded the State Award for Architecture, showcasing the diversity and quality of construction in Schleswig-Holstein. St. Peter-Ording's Experience Center, with its sustainable design, joins this esteemed group of award-winning projects.
The municipality of St. Peter-Ording, located in the Nordfriesland district, consists of four districts (Böhl, Bad, Dorf, Ording). With around 18,000 guest beds for visitors, the town offers a variety of accommodations for its many tourists.
The jury particularly praised the architectural quality of the Experience Center in St. Peter-Ording. The award honors outstanding buildings that exhibit architectural quality, sustainability, and social added value. The recognition of St. Peter-Ording's Experience Center is a testament to the town's dedication to sustainable tourism and architectural excellence.
