In the heart of the Solingen Bird and Animal Park, a lively all-female group of birds has made their home, and among them is Bazille, a captivating sun conure.
Originally native to the light forests, palm groves, and savannas of northeastern Brazil, French Guiana, and Venezuela, sun conures have found a new home in this German park. Known for their vibrant, colorful feathers and energetic personalities, they have become a favourite among park visitors.
Sun conures, like Bazille, have a distinctive appearance. Their feathers shimmer in bright green, accentuated by strong yellow, orange, and red tones on their head, chest, and wings. These birds are also easily recognizable by their strong, hooked beak, which allows them to crack open hard shells with ease.
Bazille, with her radiant yellow and orange feathers, is a standout among her roommates, the Jendaya budgerigars. Although similar in color, the budgerigars have less green in their feathers and no red eye rings. Despite their differences, the five birds form a lively community where there's always something going on. They can be seen flying around the enclosure, hanging upside down from branches, or making loud noises to draw attention.
The sun conures' diet is diverse, including fruits, nuts, seeds, and cactus fruits. Their morning meal consists of fresh fruit, carrots, and celery, while lunch is a mix of budgerigar food, corn, and wheat.
Sun conures are known to live up to 30 years, and Bazille is no exception. She has been a part of the park for several years, and her distinctive personality has made her a popular attraction. Bazille is known for her curiosity and friendliness towards visitors and caretakers. In the past, she even showed a playful side by pinching caretakers after seemingly innocently nibbling on their ears.
The arrival of the food cart causes a lot of commotion, as the budgerigars are hard to hold back. The sun conures, on the other hand, are more relaxed and take their time to enjoy their meal.
On warm days, Bazille and her companions enjoy a special attraction: a simulated tropical rain shower with a sprinkler. Some birds enjoy a head-down shower while others prefer a cozy foot bath in the water channel.
