Too Swamped With Daily Watering? This DIY Self-Watering Planter Offers a Solution

Looking for a set-and-forget watering solution for your plants? Then, you're gonna love this self-watering bucket idea from @saltyacresnc. It's perfect for busy plant parents who accidentally neglect their plants more than they'd like!

Imagine a life where you don’t have to worry about daily watering schedules or keep tabs on your plants' thirst. With this DIY setup, you can give your plant the joy of meal prepping - no more sad, wilted plants! It's a breeze for beginners and impresses those experienced green thumbs too.

So, how does it work?

This self-watering container setup is quite straightforward. The top bucket houses your plants and soil, while the bottom bucket acts as the water reservoir. A cotton rope, acting as the plant's water straw, draws moisture from the water reservoir as the soil dries. No waterlogged roots here!

Wooden strips suspended from the top bucket ensure it stays just above the waterline, allowing the rope to hang into the water without letting the bucket itself sit in it.

Using natural cotton rope is essential, as synthetic materials don’t wick properly. Refill the water reservoir every few days, depending on the sun and heat, to keep your plant hydrated. Avoid overfilling, as too much water can stop the rope from doing its job.

Here's what you need:

  1. Two buckets (3-5 gallon buckets are great)
  2. One 1-inch thick cotton rope (natural fiber only)
  3. Four 1-inch thick, 4-6 inches long wood strips
  4. A drill, screws, and a screwdriver
  5. Soil and a vegetable seedling (Bonnie used bell peppers)
  6. Water

And now, let's build it!

Step 1: Drill and Thread the Top Bucket

Drill several small drainage holes at the base of the top bucket. Drill two larger holes, thread the rope through them so a good length (at least 8 inches) dangles underneath. Tie the two ends of the rope together at the bottom. Inside the bucket, leave enough rope to run up into the soil.

Step 2: Add the Wood Support

Take four wood strips and screw them around the outside of the top bucket, just under the rim with the long side perpendicular to the ground. These will rest on the lip of the bottom bucket and keep the top bucket raised.

Step 3: Fill the Top Bucket

Add soil to the top bucket, all the way to the top. Plant your seedling and give the soil a solid initial soak. It can take a few weeks for the roots to get long enough to get the full benefits of the wicking rope at the bottom.

Step 4: Set Up the Reservoir

Drop the top bucket into the bottom bucket. The wood strips should rest on the rim, keeping the top bucket raised. Put water into the lower bucket through the gap between the two. The rope will start wicking moisture up into the soil within minutes.

If you live in a rainy area and are worried about overwatering, consider drilling a few holes just below the bottom of the inside bucket to prevent water from getting too high and causing waterlogging.

Why's it so darn amazing?

This genius system keeps the roots consistently moist without waterlogging them, which results in faster, healthier growth. Water lasts longer, weeds struggle to grow, and there's less mess from overwatering. So, embrace your inner plant parent and put this watering system to the test!
