Gemünden and Bamberg Bid Farewell to Long-Standing Businesses

Two cherished staples in Gemünden and Bamberg, Germany, have announced their closure, signaling the end of an era for both towns.

In Gemünden, the print shop and bookstore G.H. Hofmann, which has been serving the community since 1896, will shut its doors on September 27, 2025. Jürgen and Ingrid Sommerer, the current proprietors, made the decision to close the business, but economic factors were not the driving force.

Jürgen Sommerer took over the business in 1994 from his father, who joined the print shop as a master printer in 1963. At its height, the establishment employed up to eleven people. However, over the years, the business has seen a gradual decline. Currently, only Jürgen and his wife are running the store.

The Sommerers decided to sell the building of the print shop and bookstore a few years ago due to their desire not to invest time and money in it as they approach retirement age. The new owner of the building is not named specifically, but it is planned to be transformed into several residential units.

The exact details about the commercial unit on the ground floor of the historic house where the print shop and bookstore was located will be determined in the next few weeks with the architect. It is not yet certain whether a commercial unit will be created on the ground floor.

Meanwhile, in Bamberg, the specialty store "Eberls Genusswelt" in the old town will close on September 27, 2025, after nearly 60 years. The interview with Jürgen Sommerer about the closure of the print shop and bookstore G.H. Hofmann was published by inFranken.de on Monday, September 15, 2025.

Another business affected by the changing times is the book and stationery store G.H. Hofmann on Bahnhofstraße in Gemünden. The store will permanently close by the end of September 2025. Several residential units are planned to be built in the four-story historic house where the store was located.

These closures mark the end of an era for both towns, but also the beginning of new opportunities for the buildings that once housed these beloved staples.
