Tragic Conclusion

In the heart of Unterbilk, Germany, a unique community of ducks resided in a small pond, much to the delight of local resident Lutz Mehlhorn. However, a recent incident has sparked controversy and conversation among neighbours.

For several weeks, Lutz had been caring for the ducks, ensuring their daily feeding and fresh water supply. But on a fateful evening at 6 pm feeding time, the ducks were mysteriously "removed" from the property. The event was triggered by an intense quacking of the mother duck and a dull rolling sound, as reported by Lutz during a video conference.

Despite numerous inquiries and research, attempts to find out who was responsible for the ducks' departure were met with shrugs or textless short messages. This reluctance extended beyond the incident, with some people showing a general reluctance towards nature, leading to unfair behavior towards the ducks and those who cared for them.

However, the incident did not deter Lutz's determination. He purchased a larger basin for enough water for the ducks and acquired a ladder for species-appropriate access. Upon revisiting the property, he found the rearing area, water basin, and chairs arranged for evening observation still intact.

The removal of the ducks did not go unnoticed by the community. The garden, once filled with life, now appeared dull and lifeless, with the small pond no longer moving. The event, however, sparked new quality neighbourly conversations, with some learning more about their fellow residents through the duck incident.

Lutz Mehlhorn concluded that some people are unwilling to accept even minor restrictions to their daily routine, and questioned how people will overcome big challenges if they act selfishly and without a sense of community. He suggested that those who act this way are likely to be selfish and uncommitted to community issues, to the detriment of people, society, and nature.

Despite the setback, Lutz remains hopeful. The duck community is currently thinking about the flight path the three ducks would take after the two young ducks hatched in early June, led by an experienced wild duck. As the ducks prepare for their journey, Lutz continues to advocate for the importance of community spirit and care for nature.

Lutz Mehlhorn's love for ducks extends beyond home-and-garden boundaries, as he now plans to create a designated home-and-garden area for his feathered friends, ensuring a lifestyle that caters to their needs. Remarking on the community's response, some neighbors have shown an increased interest in pets and nature, fostering a sense of unity and mutual respect that transcends individual lifestyles.
