Regensburg's Obermünster Quarter Goes Green & Traffic-Calmed

Transforming and Traffic Management of Obermünster District in Regensburg

Starting from Thursday, May 22, 2025, public and paid parking spaces within the Obermünster Quarter will vanish, with a parking ban effective from May 19, 2025. The Obere Bachgasse-Obermünsterstraße through-traffic from the western direction will be blocked using a new bollard. With this reconstruction, 22 resident parking spaces will be made available on Obermünsterplatz.

From then on, the former parking spaces of Obermünsterstraße will be home to bike stands, e-scooter sharing stations, cargo bicycle parking spots, and a bicycle repair station. This area will also feature mobile trees and colorfully designed, greened seating areas (CityDecks company).

Planning and Building Director Florian Plajer explained, “As a consumption-free area, the parklets invite the neighborhood to come together and enjoy time outdoors together.”

Various modules will be erected at the western end of Obermünsterstraße, opposite the Jesuit Square, as well as in the western area of Obermünsterplatz. Temporary parking bans will be established in the affected areas from May 19, and there may be short-term road closures in Obermünsterstraße in the following two weeks.

Mayor Gertrud Maltz-Schwarzfischer expresses her delight at reducing the traffic burden, saying, “I’m finally glad that we can meet the wishes of many residents and businesses and significantly reduce traffic load many times over.”

Regensburg is actively promoting pedestrianized and low-traffic zones to combat pollution, improve quality of life, and enhance urban mobility. While the Obermünster Quarter may not have a distinct, large-scale project labeled as immediate traffic-calming measures or green initiatives, it is highly probable that the quarter is part of the city's broader plan.

As of May 2025, couple City of Regensburg's ongoing pedestrianization projects with the Traffic Calming strategies, it's evident that Obermünster stands to benefit. The quarter is expected to boast:

  1. Reduced Vehicle Traffic: Citywide efforts to minimize car access in sensitive areas like the historic core, including Obermünster, are underway.
  2. Green Improvements: Expanded green spaces, tree-planting, and biodiversity corridors are essential parts of the city's revitalization plan, possibly impacting Obermünster.

In the revitalized Obermünster Quarter, the usual traffic may decrease, offering a chance for residents to savor a quieter, greener lifestyle. As part of Regensburg's broader plan, this pedestrian-friendly area might also witness the enhancement of home-and-garden spaces, favoring sustainable-living initiatives.
