Tunnel at Abdul Razzaq Gate gets close to renovation completion for public use again

The historic Darwaza Tunnel, a key traffic artery linking several vital areas in the capital, is set to reopen to pedestrians soon following comprehensive maintenance. The tunnel, which was closed in 2020 due to cracks and fissures in its structure, has undergone extensive repair work to ensure its durability and long-term protection.

The maintenance work, which includes necessary crack repairs, renewal of service networks, paving, lighting, and landscaping, was initially faced with repeated delays due to technical reports from the Government Performance Monitoring Agency and overlapping responsibilities among government bodies overseeing the work. However, modern materials and methods were applied during the maintenance to ensure the tunnel's structural integrity.

The internal repair work of the Darwaza Tunnel has been completed, and the concrete structure has been rehabilitated. Asphalt laying, installation of signals, and upgrades to the surrounding infrastructure were part of the maintenance work. The maintenance project aimed to preserve the tunnel's heritage value as part of the old Kuwait Wall.

In a significant turn of events, the restoration project will now also include the Abdul Razzaq Gateway Tunnel and the street beneath it, thanks to a KD 650,000 donation from the Commercial Bank. Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the Emir of Kuwait, made this generous donation. The Commercial Bank will cover all expenses for the restoration project, including design, implementation, supervision, permits, and related requirements.

The restoration of the Abdul Razzaq Gateway Tunnel and the street beneath it will improve the area's overall appearance and contribute to enhancing sustainability. The maintenance of the Darwaza Tunnel and the restoration of the Abdul Razzaq Gateway Tunnel are part of a larger initiative to preserve Kuwait's historical landmarks.

In 2020, the overhead traffic signal of the Darwaza Tunnel was opened to pedestrians as a temporary measure, and this pedestrian access is expected to continue following the completion of the maintenance work. The Darwaza Tunnel, with its rich history and strategic location, remains an important part of Kuwait's urban landscape.

The maintenance and restoration of the Darwaza Tunnel and the Abdul Razzaq Gateway Tunnel are testament to the commitment of the Kuwaiti government and private sector to preserving and enhancing the city's infrastructure and heritage. The projects are expected to be completed soon, bringing these historic landmarks back to their former glory for the enjoyment of residents and visitors alike.
