UK Government Warns of 'Greenwashing' in Pet Food Industry

The UK government has issued a warning about 'greenwashing' in the pet food industry. Sarahjane Widdowson, Global Waste Management + Policy Lead at Root, has highlighted the impact of misleading environmental claims on customer loyalty and trust. The government's Green Claims Code checklist aims to combat this issue.

Greenwashing, the practice of making false or misleading environmental claims, is prevalent in the pet food industry. The UK government, through the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy, has provided a checklist to help businesses comply with consumer protection law on green claims. This code guides companies in making accurate, clear, and understandable environmental claims.

In Europe, countries are taking stricter measures. Certain terms like 'biodegradable' are being banned, and specific certifications are required for compostable packaging. Meanwhile, high-profile lawsuits in the U.S. have targeted plastic packaging and greenwashing claims, indicating a global shift towards accountability.

Pet food producers must understand their product's entire life cycle impact when making green claims. The UK government's Green Claims Code checklist provides a framework for this. Clear and accurate information on durability, disposability, and comparisons should be provided. Failure to comply with consumer protection law could lead to loss of customer trust and potential legal action.
