Bustling Cultural Celebration Adopts New Itinerary - Vibrant Multicultural Showcase Taking a Fresh Routeway
Bringing the Colors of the World to Berlin's Streets: A Look at the 2025 Carnival of Cultures
- *
Get ready for an explosion of colors and cultures as the much-anticipated Carnival of Cultures returns to Berlin! This year, the festival promises familiar fun with a twist. Let's dive into what's new and what you can expect during this multicultural extravaganza.
When's the Party?
The festivities kick off on Friday, 6th June, and run through Whit Monday, 9th June. The traditional parade will take place on Whit Sunday, while the Children's Carnival of Cultures happens on Saturday. The children's parade commences at Mariannenplatz, leading to a vibrant family festival in Görlitzer Park.
Where's the Action?
The four-day celebrations will, as always, unfold in Kreuzberg around Blücherplatz. Be prepared for an entertaining mix of music, theater, and performance from over 800 artists gracing three stages. Additionally, there will be approximately 350 stalls selling various arts, crafts, info, food, and drinks.
What's Fresh this Year?
This year, the parade is breaking away from its traditional route and moving to Friedrichshain, down Frankfurter Allee. As Anna-Maria Seifert, co-director of the Carnival of Cultures, puts it, "it's an opportunity to bring new images to this impressive street." The shift to the eastern part of Berlin was necessitated by a major construction site in Gneisenaustraße, the original route's unwelcome interloper. The parade will commence at the intersection of Frankfurter Allee/Proskauer Straße on Sunday at 13:30, concluding in the area of Karl-Marx-Allee/Berolina Straße.
Who's Joining the Party?
The 2025 Carnival of Cultures boasts an impressive lineup of 68 groups, with 13 making their debut. "Some have been coming for 20 years or more," as reported by Seifert. Around 22 groups are made up entirely of Berliners, with the remainder hailing from various federal states.
How Many People are Expected to Attend?
Last year saw a crowd of around 1.1 million people celebrating the festival, with approximately 650,000 attending the parade alone. The organizers are hopeful for another bumper turnout this year.
Staying Safe and Sound
The police will be present throughout the entire four-day event, implementing extensive security measures. On the day of the parade, around a thousand officers can be expected. Steps will be taken to protect the street festival and parade from unauthorized vehicles, with barriers and police cars guarding access roads. There will also be mobile police patrols and emergency services on hand, including the Johanniter service with mobile and stationary first aid stations at the festival and along the parade route.
Preserving the Environment
With tens of thousands of people gathering in a small area, the environment and residents must be considered. The organizers urge visitors to avoid littering and ensure proper waste disposal. Glass bottles should be avoided, and cigarette butts should not be discarded on the ground. Eco-friendly alternatives, such as leaf plates for food service and reusable cups for drinks, will be used. After the parade on Whit Monday, a clean-up effort will involve participants and visitors to minimize environmental impact.
Stay Off the Median
The organizers kindly ask that you refrain from entering the median along the new parade route. It not only facilitates the movement of vehicles but also serves as a vital habitat for plants and insects.
Carnival of Cultures: A Celebration of Life and Diversity
As a response to racism and numerous incidents, the Carnival of Cultures was first held in 1996. Its purpose was to serve as a symbol of diversity and peaceful coexistence, embodying a free, fair, and pluralistic society that encourages unity among its people. The event promotes respect for all living beings and the environment. With around 4,000 participants, it stands firmly against any form of racism and discrimination, upholding the values of tolerance and unity. An awareness team will ensure that the festival remains a harassment-free zone.
In an effort to uphold the values of diversity and peaceful coexistence, the Community policy on racism and intolerance will be strictly enforced during the 2025 Carnival of Cultures in Berlin. To create an even more inclusive atmosphere, the festival organizers are working on integrating environmental policies, such as reducing single-use plastic, promoting eco-friendly alternatives, and encouraging proper waste disposal, into their Employment policy for the staff and vendors involved in the event.
