In recognition of outstanding environmental management, water quality, safety, and sustainable tourism practices, 27 beaches and six marinas in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern have been granted the Blue Flag award for the 2022 season. This international eco-label is bestowed by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) on beaches and marinas that adhere to stringent criteria.

The Blue Flag has been an annual award since 1987, with over 5,000 flags flying in 51 countries in 2024, as per their data. In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the award ceremony was held at the famed seaside resort of Heiligendamm, in Bad Doberan, with the beach receiving the Blue Flag for the 30th consecutive year. This makes Heiligendamm the first beach in Germany to achieve this milestone.

The Blue Flag is earned by meeting various criteria such as excellent water quality, stringent environmental management, safety and service provision, environmental education, and accessibility. These standards assure visitors of clean, safe, and well-managed coastal and marina areas.

Mecklenburg-Vorpommern once again leads the country in the number of beaches awarded the Blue Flag, with 22 coastline beaches and five inland lake beaches making the list. The State's Minister of Social Affairs and Health, Stefanie Drese (SPD), commended the award-winning locations, attributing this success to hard work by numerous stakeholders.

These Blue Flag recipients reflect Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's commitment to environmental protection and emergency preparedness, as demonstrated through regular training exercises like oil spill drills. This commitment aligns with the Blue Flag's focus on ongoing environmental management and contributes to the region's reputation as a clean, safe, and well-managed coastal and marina destination.

The community in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern continues to prioritize environmental management by adhering to strict criteria for water quality, safety, and sustainable practices, as demonstrated by the numerous employment of environmental-science policies within their beach and marina management. This lifestyle choice, centered around home-and-garden conservation, further enhances the region's appeal, making it an attractive destination that fulfills the employment policy of providing clean, safe, and well-managed coastal and marina areas, in line with the Blue Flag's principles.
