WRI Türkiye to Study Ankara, Antalya, and Gaziantep for Urban Heat Island Solutions

WRI Ross Center's Deep Dive Cities initiative has been fostering long-term relationships with cities to tackle urban challenges. Recently, the Livable Caferağa project in Istanbul addressed issues like overcrowding, heat, and pollution. Now, WRI Türkiye is set to study Ankara, Antalya, and Gaziantep for nature-based solutions to urban heat islands.

The Deep Dive Cities project aims to create a comprehensive concept plan for integrating nature-based solutions into urban mobility projects in Kadıköy. WRI Türkiye's initial phase, the Livable Caferağa project, ran from April 2023 to July 2024. It addressed local challenges through community engagement, empowering residents to shape a more livable space.

Five key solutions were co-created with the community, enhancing pedestrian safety, improving mobility, and mitigating climate challenges. Caferağa was chosen as a priority area for developing a low-emission zone, as part of Istanbul's Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP). The success of this project will inform the next phase, focusing on the entire Kadıköy district and exploring nature-based solutions for urban heat island mitigation. Some solutions, like expanding public transportation, will be implemented by the fourth quarter of 2025, while others will be ongoing.

WRI Türkiye's community-driven initiative in Istanbul's Caferağa neighborhood has shown promising results. The next phase will build on this success, expanding to the entire Kadıköy district. This project underscores the potential of nature-based solutions and community engagement in creating more sustainable, inclusive, and livable urban environments.
