Young Saviors Avert Tragedy: Schoolchildren Rescue Peer from Near-Drowning Incident
In Nordheim, Baden-Württemberg, on the 15th of August, a four-year-old child took a fateful dive into a 3.85-meter deep swimming pool. The child briefly surfaced and then immediately sank. Two schoolchildren, Marlene (11) and Leo (12), sprang into action without hesitation.
Marlene recalled thinking, "Get the child to the surface so it can keep living." Leo dived almost four meters deep to reach the child. With a crucial move they had learned just days before, they managed to save the young boy.
Leo had practiced the tow-in technique a week earlier with the DLRG (German Lifeguard Association). Upon reaching the child, Marlene pressed water out of the boy's stomach at the pool's edge. Moments after being pulled to the surface, the boy was able to breathe again.
The quick response of Marlene and Leo prevented a potential tragedy at the swimming pool. The incident left a profound impact on the duo, as they were later told by a friend that the boy might not have survived without their intervention.
Mayor Volker Schriek praised Marlene and Leo for their quick intervention, referring to them as "little heroes and big role models." He also suggested that more parents should be aware of their responsibility by the poolside.
The location of the incident was not specified beyond being in Nordheim, Baden-Württemberg. The names of the adults present at the pool during the incident were not mentioned. However, the bravery and quick thinking of Marlene and Leo are a testament to the importance of swimming safety and the potential impact that young people can have in an emergency situation.
