Livin' the Zoo Life: A Monkey Moment at Leipzig Zoo

Working at Leipzig Zoo isn't just a job, it's a rollercoaster of emotions, as animal keeper Dana Eisenreich can attest. A recent episode of "Elephant, Tiger & Co" (broadcast on May 23rd) documents a heartwarming moment for Dana in Gondwanaland.

The Little Red-shouldered Squirrel Monkey Who Conquered a Huge Heart

Dana's latest animal kin, Maleficent, the red-shouldered squirrel monkey, has only been around for three months. But this tiny monkey has already stolen Dana's heart, and it's no wonder why—they catch up several times a day, when Dana brings food to the enclosure. This shared routine fosters a bond and trust, and now Maleficent even reaches out to Dana's hand.

The East German Zoo's Well-kept Secret - But Not for Long

As Dana observes the enclosure, she notes, "Things have been a little out of the ordinary recently." Peering closer, you see two more monkeys darting about. Little Meli, the proud mother, has given birth to her first offspring, a duo of curious newcomers. "This is the first time we've had these little ones here," Dana beams, "and we couldn't be happier."

The babies, now about a month old, were initially restricted to the nest. But recently, they've taken their first steps outside, bringing Dana immense joy. She's begun to introduce herself to the little ones, offering tasty treats as an incentive. Dana's optimistic this will take, as she visits the enclosure three times a day with yummy food.

On the Horizon:

It's crucial that this approach works, as it'll enable the zoo to get closer to the babies to determine their genders. Right now, the sexes of the two new additions remain a mystery. Dana, however, acknowledges that having them around complicates her duties—four little monkeys are now darting around, requiring extra vigilance to avoid stepping on them.
