Zoo in Chon Buri receives a new group of squirrel monkeys

Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Chon Buri is excited to announce the arrival of five newborn squirrel monkey babies. These small, agile primates are easily recognized by their distinctive black rings around their mouths and noses, and their pink faces that give them the appearance of wearing a mask.

The newborns are an indication of Khao Kheow Open Zoo's high-quality animal care, as stated by Mr Narongwit. Visitors can see the babies daily at the Wildlife Wonderland section of the zoo. However, due to the protective behavior of their mothers, the sex of the infants cannot yet be determined.

Squirrel monkeys, belonging to the genus Saimiri, are small primates weighing between 750 to 1,100 grams (about 1.6 to 2.4 pounds). They have a yellowish or olive coat, with striking white facial masks and black markings around their eyes. Squirrel monkeys are diurnal, active during the day, and are often found in large groups in tree canopies, leaping agilely between branches.

Interestingly, squirrel monkeys' tails are longer than their bodies, averaging around 40cm. This is significantly longer than their body length of about 30 centimetres (12 inches), excluding their tails. Despite their long tails, squirrel monkeys have a short tail relative to body size compared to other monkey species.

The current total squirrel monkey population at Khao Kheow Open Zoo is 23. Children under 12 or no taller than 135cm are allowed free entry to the zoo. Last year, Khao Kheow Open Zoo welcomed "Moo Deng", a pygmy hippopotamus, who became a global star at the zoo.

Visitors are encouraged to visit Khao Kheow Open Zoo on July 28, which is His Majesty the King's birthday, to see the new squirrel monkey babies. This will be a great opportunity to learn more about these fascinating creatures and witness the high-quality animal care provided by the zoo.

Treating these newborn squirrel monkeys is just another demonstration of Khao Kheow Open Zoo's dedication towards maintaining a top-notch home-and-garden for exotic animals. It's essential to make a visit to the zoo on July 28 to appreciate their lifestyle and the high-quality home they've been provided.
